How do you know it's a Mozilla project? It doesn't look to be one to me.
Sure, it's built on top of the Mozilla XUL platform, just like Joost is.
You know you're right, and the article from which I found the claim that it was a Mozilla project seems to be a dead link now (I was going to post it here).
IIRC, the author of that article linked to: http://mozillalinks.org/wp/2007/10/instantbird-mozilla-based-instant-messaging/.
Perhaps he was thrown off by the phrased "Mozilla-based"…
